The Options
| Option | What changes | Average cost (HomeGuide) |
|---|---|---|
| Paint | Color of existing doors and boxes | $2,000–$6,500 |
| Refinish | Strip and re-stain or clear coat. Keeps the wood look | $1,500–$4,500 |
| Reface | New doors and drawer fronts, veneer over the boxes | $5,000–$13,000 |
| Replace | New boxes, doors and drawers. Layout can change | $4,500–$15,000 |
A Simple Decision Path
- Are the boxes sound? If they’re sagging, water-damaged or falling apart, replace.
- Do you want a different layout? Then it’s a remodel, and paint isn’t the answer.
- Do you like the door style? If yes, paint (or refinish to keep wood). If no, consider new doors and paint the boxes to match, or reface.
The Hybrid: New Doors, Painted Boxes
HomeGuide lists replacing doors and drawer fronts at $2,200–$6,600. Some homeowners swap dated cathedral-arch doors for shaker doors and have the painter finish the boxes and new doors together so the color matches.
Resale
HomeGuide says painting cabinets in a light, neutral color with quality paint can return 50% to 100%+ of the cost, depending on the cabinets’ condition and the local market. Treat that as a general estimate, not a promise.
When Paint Is a Poor Fit
- Thermofoil that is peeling or bubbling
- Particleboard swollen by leaks
- Cabinets you plan to tear out within a few years
