Why Paint Instead of Replace?

HomeGuide lists full cabinet replacement at $4,500–$15,000 and refacing at $5,000–$13,000, compared with $2,000–$6,500 to paint an average kitchen (HomeGuide). If the boxes are sturdy, the doors are flat, and you like the layout, paint can change the look for much less.

Wichita Kitchens

Wichita’s housing is older than in its fast-growing suburbs. The median home was built in 1974, and about 57% predate 1980 (U.S. Census ACS 2020–2024). That means plenty of 1970s–1990s kitchens with stained oak cabinets, which are good candidates for paint. It also means some kitchens have original painted surfaces that may contain lead (see older homes).

What a Professional Job Includes

  1. Remove the doors, drawer fronts and hardware, and label them.
  2. Degrease. Kitchen grease is the number one cause of peeling.
  3. Scuff-sand or de-gloss, then fill dents and open grain if requested.
  4. Prime with a bonding primer suited to the surface.
  5. Apply two finish coats, usually sprayed on the doors (see finishes).
  6. Rehang and adjust everything.
